Tribute to the 14th UNESCO Global Media and Information Literacy Week (24-31 October 2025)

The Hellenic Film & Audiovisual Center – ΕΚΚΟΜΕΔ and CIFEJ are actively participating in the celebrations of the 14th UNESCO Global Media and Information Literacy Week, with a series of initiatives, partnerships, and educational programs that highlight the power of creativity, knowledge, and conscious information in the digital era.

This year’s UNESCO theme, “Minds Over AI – Media and Information Literacy in Digital Spaces,” focuses on human thought and Artificial Intelligence, emphasizing the need to empower citizens with critical analysis skills and responsible interaction in digital environments.

The UNESCO Feature Conference will take place in Cartagena, Colombia, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, bringing to the forefront international dialogue on the role of Media and Information Literacy in an era of rapid technological advancement, information overload, and algorithms.

6th International Student Competition on Educational Board and Digital Game Design «The lesson is… a Game»

Using games as a pedagogical tool, students and educators co-create content that blends learning with imagination. The competition, open to the educational communities of Greece, the Greek Diaspora, and Cyprus, returns for its 6th consecutive year, transforming learning into a captivating game experience Students from primary and secondary education will have the opportunity to create an original board or digital game based on their favorite subject or school activity. This year’s theme “Fake News – Misinformation” invites critical engagement with digital content.
The competition is organized by ΕΚΚΟΜΕΔ, under the auspices of the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad and Public Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital Governance, Panteion University, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the Association of Computer and Communications Engineers, the Panhellenic Association of Graphic Arts Technology Graduates, and the Scratch Game Educators Group.

Cinematherapy by ΕΚΚΟΜΕΔ

Cinematherapy by ΕΚΚΟΜΕΔ participates in the Nevronas FESTival School Edition 2025: “Classmates in Life!”—an educational and cultural initiative dedicated to art, inclusion, and coexistence.
Through experiential workshops and screenings, the program invites students from mainstream and special schools, as well as structures for People with Disabilities, to explore the language of cinema as a medium of self-expression, empathy, and communication.
Participants learn to “read behind the image,” understanding the messages of mass and digital media. The program promotes the “visible thinking skill,” a core principle of Media and Information Literacy.

National Network on Media Literacy Network enters its 5 years

More than 200 educators from Greece and the Greek Diaspora participate this year in the network’s training activities.
The Network aims to foster audiovisual and digital literacy among students and to promote Media Education within the Greek educational system.
The Network, in its 5th year of operation, develops media literacy skills through an innovative “train the trainer” approach, encouraging active, responsible, and creative use of media and digital technologies.
It is implemented by ΕΚΚΟΜΕΔ, the Department of Educational Radiotelevision & Digital Media, and the Directorate of Primary Education of Serres, under the Ministry of Education.

CIFEJ new Global Educational Series 2025-2026 Launch

The International Centre of Films for Children and Young People (CIFEJ), hosted in Athens under the auspices of ΕΚΚΟΜΕΔ since early 2025, launches the CIFEJ Global Educational Series 2025–2026.
The first online seminar “The 3Cs in Education through the Cinematic Gaze of Abbas Kiarostami” takes place on October 29th, 15.00 EET, and focuses on the three core educational values (3Cs) through the early works of the acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami, highlighting cinema as a medium for aesthetic cultivation, creativity, and critical reflection.

DAISSy Workshops by the Hellenic Open University & EKKOMED

The DAISSy Research Group of the Hellenic Open University in collaboration with ΕΚΚΟΜΕΔ organized in October two online workshops within the framework of the European project “GenderED Coalition: A cross-country coalition against gender disinformation for equitable societies.” The workshops focused on creativity, critical viewing, visual culture, and gender dimensions of misinformation, empowering youth, educators, and journalists through Media and Information Literacy.

EKKOMEΔ present at 13th Chania Film Festival

ΕΚΚΟΜΕΔ continues to actively support Chania Film Festival (15–26 October 2025), a well-established film institution in Greece and internationally, and the project Chania Film Festival Edu known for  promoting film education and audiovisual literacy among young people.
With over 8,000 participating students and educators annually, the Festival serves as a workshop of creativity and inspiration, showcasing cinema as a language of communication, understanding, and cultural identity.

27 October – UNESCO World Day for Audiovisual Heritage

ΕΚΚΟΜΕΔ honors UNESCO World Day for Audiovisual Heritage (27 October), emphasizing the role of audiovisual archives as the foundation of cultural memory and collective identity.
Through the National Digital Repository of Audiovisual Works, ΕΚΚΟΜΕΔ safeguards Greece’s cinematic heritage and memory as an integral part of the nation’s modern cultural history. Access, preservation, and utilization of audiovisual heritage are central to Media and Information Literacy, as they strengthen citizens’ ability to familiarize with the past, and interpret and evaluate visual culture to the present.

ΕΚΚΟΜΕΔ connects creativity, education, technology, and culture, reinforcing Greece’s participation in the global dialogue on Media and Information Literacy.
Media Literacy is not merely a technical skill—it is a cultural way of life, combining knowledge, culture, and social responsibility toward creative, critical, and inclusive societies.
