Creative Europe MEDIA
The Creative Europe MEDIA strand focuses on providing funding opportunities to the European audiovisual sector professionals. Through the various calls for proposals announced yearly, it supports projects and actions covering a great span of audiovisual sector activities (e.g. audiovisual content development and production, film festivals, film distribution, innovative tools and business models development, training and skills development activities, et al.).
MEDIA counts more than 30 years of supporting the European audiovisual space. Originally founded in 1990, it is one of the most renowned and longest-running funding programmes on a European level. The term “MEDIA” is an abbreviation of the French “Mesures pour Encourager le Développement de L’Industrie Audiovisuelle” (Measures to Encourange the Development of the Audiovisual Industry).
Beginning with the 2021-2027 programming period, the priorities of the MEDIA strand are structured around 4 clusters, to ensure more flexibility in the actions supported and to encourage cooperation among the different parts of the audiovisual value-chain. These clusters are the following:
1. Content: Creation and production of high-quality content is the foundation of the European audiovisual industry.
2. Business: Promotion of business innovation, scalability and talents across the European audiovisual industry’s value chain.
3. Audience: Connecting European audiovisual works with their audiences and support audience development across Europe and beyond. Each year, MEDIA supports over 1 100 cinemas in 34 countries and reaches 65 million people across borders.
4. Policy support and awareness raising: A common European approach to the main audiovisual policy issues is essential to consolidate the European audiovisual single market.
